Alabama Gourd Basket with Handle

These gourd baskets are designed and handmade by Talitha Norris, a sweet Southern woman born and raised in Opelika, Alabama. The process she uses is painstaking and takes several days. To make a basket, Talitha hand cuts the gourds, dries and cures them, then applies a durable and protective coating. They have the appearance and durability of wood, but are much more interesting. Using local Long Leaf pine needles and upholstery thread, she hand weaves the rim and handle. Applying a durable coating, she hardens the rim and handle so that it can be used like any other small basket. What a conversation piece! Since gourds and pine needles are natural products, each basket will have characteristics unique to the materials used, and are approximatley the size of a large cantaloupe.
