Built in 1927, the Alabama Theatre on 3rd Avenue North in downtown Birmingham is the iconic symbol of the Showplace of the South. After being spared from demolition, the theater was completely restored to its original elegance. The theater now hosts movies, events and performances, and The Mighty Wurlitzer still entertains audiences. In 1993 the Alabama Theatre was designated the official state historic theatre of Alabama.
