Only ten years after the birth of Birmingham in 1871, Colonel James Withers Sloss began constructing the first Sloss furnace, and the first iron was produced on April 18, 1882. Sloss Furnaces continued to produce pig iron through two world wars, finally closing in 1971. Created by Mike Neilson, an artistic photographer in Birmingham, Alabama, this composite image depicts Sloss Furnaces at their zenith. The head of Vulcan, the Roman god of the forge and symbol of Birmingham, is merged with the flames. Printed with pigmented ink on matte paper, each print is signed and numbered as one of a limited edition of 250.
