Product Description

Since 1936, the 56 foot statue of Vulcan, sculpted by Giuseppe Moretti and cast from Sloss #2 pig iron, has stood on the top of Red Mountain overlooking Birmingham. Commissioned by the Commercial Club, Vulcan was displayed at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis to represent Birmingham, its iron and steel-making ability, and Alabama's immense mineral resources. Returned in pieces to Birmingham at the end of the fair, Vulcan lay along railway tracks and then stood assembled at the Alabama State Fair grounds until 1936, when he was moved to his present location. In Roman mythology, Vulcan was the god of the Forge. Created by Mike Neilson, an artistic photographer in Birmingham, Alabama, this composite image consists of Vulcan’s head, photographed when the statue was recently dismantled for repairs, superposed on an Alabama skyline. Printed with pigmented ink on matte paper, each print is signed and numbered as one of a limited edition of 250. Matte black aluminum frame, bright white museum board double mat, UV-resistant glass. 16” x 20” fine art print, 8” x 12” image size printed with pigmented ink on matte paper. Ships in 1 - 2 weeks.
