For most of its history, Birmingham’s economy was driven by iron and steel production. But by the late 20th century the economy became dominated by health care, trade, finance, research and education. Created by Mike Neilson, an artistic photographer in Birmingham, Alabama, this composite image depicts the old and new Birmingham, with the Vulcan’s head (the old) looking over the commercial center of downtown Birmingham (the new).
